Our Fresh Cut Douglas Fir Waney Edged Board is waney edge cladding in Douglas fir, for external use.

About Douglas fir

Colour varies from pinks and browns to creams depending on where in the tree the board is cut. Dark brown knots can loosen as the wood dries, and resin patches may ooze a little at first and in later hot summers.

Left untreated it weathers to silver grey.

A strong, hard-wearing softwood.

Profile and fitting

Each board has one waney edge (with bark on) and one square edge. Boards are laid to show the waney edge. There is no fixed overlap: each board should overlap the one below enough to cover its waney edge and keep moisture out. About 100 mm is a rough guide.

To cover an area, measure it and allow roughly 30% extra for the overlap.

Good to know

  • Use stainless steel or specialist coated fixings: iron fixings can react with Douglas fir and cause black staining.
  • Natural timber varies: expect some differences in colour and grain from board to board and from the photos.
  • Fresh cut (green) boards shrink and move as they dry.
  • If exposed to hot, dry weather before or soon after fitting, boards are likely to cup, warp and split. The best time to fit is in autumn or winter.
  • Sizes are nominal and can vary slightly with moisture content.
