Wooden Driveway Gates

UK Timber makes handmade wooden driveway gates in our Corby workshops in the Midlands. We have been in Corby since 2002, with over 100 years at Brigstock. All the timber is selected at our own sawmills. Every gate is built with traditional jointing, such as mortise and tenon joints, and uses substantial bars and uprights. Our gates are not the cheaper nailed or stapled thin gauge kind.

Hardwood or softwood?

  • European oak (oak driveway gates): oak is known for its golden colour, its durability and its timeless character. Choose oak for a gate that will last for decades and age naturally.
  • British Douglas Fir (Douglas Fir softwood driveway gates): a lighter-cost softwood option made in the same styles. Sold as pairs and as single gates.

Both timbers come in cottage, palisade and closeboard styles, with midview, swan neck, curved top or flat top heads. For garage doors, choose a closeboard gate with a flat top, in oak or Douglas Fir.

Made to size with our gate configurator

Need a width or height outside our standard sizes? The timber gate configurator lets you build your own gate. The gate kit calculator gives you quantities and a price ex VAT.

How to measure for driveway gates

  1. Measure the clear opening between the faces of the gate posts, or the walls. Measure at the top, the middle and the bottom, and use the smallest figure.
  2. Allow for the gaps. Single gate: 10 mm on the hinge side and 10 mm on the latch side, 20 mm in total. Pair of gates: 40 mm in total. Pair with a pedestrian gate: 70 mm in total. Our timber gate configurator shows these gaps and works them out for you.
  3. Decide the height and allow 50 mm ground clearance under the gates. On gravel, uneven ground or a slope, allow 75–100 mm, and measure the uphill swing side on site. Over a level garage threshold, the clearance can drop to 20–25 mm with a brush or rubber weather strip.
  4. Check that the ground slopes the way the gates will open.

Finishes

You have two choices for oak and Douglas Fir gates. Leave them untreated so they weather to a silver grey over time, or apply a UV oil to help keep their colour. We supply Treatex for both oak and Douglas Fir.

Posts and fittings

Hang your gates on our oak and softwood gate posts. Use our galvanised gate fittings and gate fixings, which are chosen to last. For field and ranch gates, see 5 bar wooden field gates. For a single walk-through gate, see pedestrian gates.
